Rebecca Sommer '16
Outstanding Senior Award

The selection committee reports that this year was especially difficult to choose a winner from many deserving nominees.

This year’s Outstanding Senior has distinguished herself in the classroom and out, with leadership qualities well beyond her years. According to a nominator, “She will be leaving SMSU a much better place than she found it.”

This year’s Outstanding Senior:

• Has been very active in the admission office, serving as an SMSU Ambassador since her freshman year and was an orientation leader for the past 3 years.

• Has been a volunteer at the Avera Marshall Regional Medical Center, participated in the Relay for Life every year, served as a Holy Redeemer Faith Formation teacher, volunteers at the Marshall Food Shelf, volunteered at the Avera Queen of Peace Hospital information desk, and helps with Adopt-a-Highway cleanup  each spring and fall.

• On campus, she has held leadership roles with the Biology Club, Environmental Awareness club, Newman Club, National Society of Leadership and Success and the Honors Club.

• She is also an outstanding tutor for both Biology and Chemistry and has a passion for helping other students learn.  One nominator wrote: “She makes others better – Better as students and better as people.”

This year’s honoree has double majored in both Chemistry and Biology and graduates with a 4.0 GPA. As a member of the Honors program, she has been on the Dean’s list – High Honors, every semester.

This year’s outstanding senior wants to be a doctor, and has been accepted to all 6 medical schools to which she has applied. She has chosen to attend the University of South Dakota Sanford School of Medicine.

Another nominator wrote, “She will be an asset to the medical profession due to her strong moral background, problem-solving abilities, excellent work ethic, and her selfless, loving, and caring personality.”

It is our pleasure on behalf of the SMSU Alumni Association and Southwest Minnesota State University to recognize Rebecca Sommer from Parkston, South Dakota, as the 2016 Outstanding Senior Award winner.
